This weekend’s results saw second placed Burnie Baptist live to fight another day despite losing to Launceston City but West Devonport and City Marians’ seasons are over after losing their respective matches.
SOUTH Burnie turned the tables on arch rivals City Marians for a vital finals victory in the first week of Greater Northern League men’s hockey finals.
Whilst the minor premiership battle between Burnie Baptist and Launceston City was held at two different venues, it did not diminish the tension in what score each team could amass by the final whistle. With only percentage separating both teams each goal was priceless to obtain the important first final match at home.
There have been any number of athletes overawed by the Beijing Olympics … and some have simply revelled in it.
Into the second category falls one girl we’ve already noticed, Stephanie Rice, and another young man who has received a fraction of her publicity – Eddie Ockenden.
Ockenden is a 21-year-old, Hobart-raised hockey player not used to smog, pollution or the big crowds but he has experienced all three in Beijing – and carried himself like a man at his fourth Olympics, never mind his first.
The penultimate round of the Greater Northern Women’s Hockey League ensured that each goal scored next week will be absolutely crucial for the final ladder positions. Burnie Baptist and Launceston City virtually guaranteed themselves a double chance with important victories, although in vastly different circumstances.
Prince of Wales Wellington and OHA both ensured the race for the minor women’s hockey premiership would be decided in the final roster match with victories in round nineteen of the southern women’s hockey roster.

Jane Addison will wake up today feeling on top of the world after producing one of her finest senior hockey performances to seal an upset 2-1 victory for fifth-placed Derwent over ladder leader Prince of Wales Wellington in Hobart yesterday.
Competition giant killers Canterbury continued on its winning way with a spectacular come-from-behind 5-4 victory over University at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre yesterday.

CITY Marians overcame a determined Devonport to nail down the ladder lead in the Greater Northern League men’s hockey on Saturday. With just three rounds remaining the Bloods are now two games clear on top, having dropped just one game to the Subs earlier this season.
Burnie Baptist and West Devonport entertained the crowd to an 11 goal shootout with the result sending the Blues to top spot. Baptist largely controlled play in the first half thanks to Annette Johnson’s rock solid defence and the clever use of the ball by midfielders, Jo Phillips, Helen Bessell and Kathy Costelloe who consistently found a loosely marked Julie Phillips up forward.
