  OUT-LETTING
By Stewart Pither - State Development Officer
January 2002

Aims and Objectives of Out-letting
  • Maintain Possession
  • Transfer play from defence to attack
  • Move the opposition
  • Utilise own strength
  • Exploit an opposition weakness
Skills required to perform effective Out-letting
  • Passing
  • Trapping
  • Leading
  • Space Awareness
  • Cue's - calling, - signals
  • Timing
  • Patience
Factors influencing outlets
  • Opposition - FALL AWAY DEFENCE
  • Opposition sets their defence in certain area of the field eg opposition sets up on half way line
  • Out letting usually starts with an easy back or sideways ball to start moving the opposition
  • Attacking players have to be aware to assist their defensive players. Well timed leads creates space for either the ball or another attacking player
  • PRESS DEFENCE
    • This occurs when the opposition crowd a particular area of the field and box the ball in
    • The easy side pass or back is denied. Look for the short pass, assists the attacking team in getting mobile
    • Exiting the restricted area as early as possible is encouraged
  • BALL LOCATION
    • Opposition will organise their press relevant to the location of the ball
    • TIME / SCORE
    • If a team is 1 goal in front with 2 minutes left to go they will look to hold the ball in a certain area of the pitch.
    • They might also drive forwards if they require a goal.
  • PLAYERS AVAILABLE
    • The number of players available to the team or the opposition due to suspensions will influence the choice of outlets
Summary
  • Passive outlets
A pass away from where the ball is located that gives the team clean uncontested possession
  • Aggressive Outlets     Possession is less guaranteed, received under greater pressure or endeavours to place pressure on the opposition quickly
i.e overhead pass to high striker
Conclusion
  • Understanding these strategies is important to players education and requires constant reinforcement
  • Out letting plays an integral part in today's game, in the next section are some different variations you might want to use in your games and training's
  OUT-LETTING DRILL 1
Simple transfer going around the back, from both sides.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 2
Transfer with players now leading forward. RH commences transfer Rd leading forward obtains ball on 2nd possession and passes to leading RH.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 3
LH starts transfer to LD, LD - RD causing the opposition to move across field. RD receives ball and tracks in field, whilst the RH still moves and calls for the ball so that the opposition will think ball is going to RH. RD actually passes to CH who is now in space and CH can now pass to IL in space.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 4
Our Left half starts with the ball and passes back to our right back, if the opposition IL over commits in our defence the RB passes to RH and receives the ball back from RH - RD,` the Rd then tracks to their IL. Once IL is committed the ball can be passed to our RH or IR.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 5
Ball starts with RD and passes to LD, LD - LH, LH can then either pass straight up the line or inside to CH, LS and CS rotate their position to collect the ball. Timing of the move is essential.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 6
LH gives short ball to IL and leads back to receive the ball. IL gives early to LH who has reposition and gives the ball to RD relieves pressure.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 7
Ball is at RH but firm press applied. RH leads away from the ball and RS runs in and takes the hit. RD drops away as RH receives uncontested ball for quick outlet through LD.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 8
The full back passes the ball either back of square across the circle or diagonally forward across the top of the circle to enable the half back to run onto and link up as a forward in attack.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 9
An inside forward moves in to the opposition press in front of a sixteen yard hit. This creates a channel for the full back to hit the ball through for either the centre forward or the winger to lead on to.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 10
Same as option nine with a variation on this may be for the inside forward to receive the ball and return it to the full back to hit through the line on the move.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 11
The left half moves infield, with the intention of bringing the opposition winger infield . The IL then moves out wide to receive a ball through the channel. The aim of this is to keep the ball wide and eliminate a player without a contest.

  OUT-LETTING DRILL 12
The fullback passes the ball to the centre half who then draws a player and either gives the ball back to the fullback or passes it to one of their inside forwards. This will then bypass the high opposition attacker and will draw another opposition player allowing a space for the ball to be moved through without contest.
