A once in a lifetime goal from Dave Woolford saw OHA progress directly into the Southern Men’s Hockey Grand Final with an extra-time 2-1 victory over Derwent today.
With the sides reduced to seven players each in the second period of extra-time, Woolford stepped up to thump a reverse stick strike that snuck past Derwent goalkeeper Nathan Fitzpatrick at his near post. OHA took the initial advantage through an unlikely goal source in skipper Simon Moore. Moore overlapped from the Left Half position to score from the narrowest of angles in the 11th minute. Atrocious weather condition wrecked havoc with the fluency of the match but OHA Italian import Daniela Malta thrived in the challenging conditions to help maintain the Ships 1-0 advantage.
Derwent were able to control the play in the second half, with Stuart Webb outstanding in defence but the Strikers wasted 3 penalty corners early in the second half. Derwent playing coach Paul Ancher missed a glorious opportunity in the 46th minute but the deserved equaliser eventually came from Dougal Middleton’s powerful penalty corner flick. Derwent had another penalty corner attempt saved by outstanding OHA keeper Aaron Guilliamse in the first period of extra-time as both teams dropped to nine players, before Woolford’s brilliance ensured OHA are just one victory from breaking their 33 year premiership drought.
Derwent must regroup quickly as they face a rejuvenated and resurgent North-West Graduates who made light work of Canterbury in their 3-0 Elimination Final win.
Anthony Stevenson opened the scoring for Graduates when he reacted first to a goal mouth scramble in the 27th minute. North-West’s James Peters was exceptional on the backline but was forced to watch his side waste the majority of their circle penetrations. The Bulldogs finally capitalised on their dominance when Marcus Richardson’s classy deflection goal in the 40th minute doubled their advantage. Another classy goal to Warren Lucas capped the Bulldogs progression to the Preliminary Final as Canterbury withdrew their goalkeeper late on and Will Lawler missed a sitter from one yard out.
