Greater Northern League Hockey Men's Semi Finals

Playing at home, Smithton would have been confident of beating Launceston City after their previous 2 wins, but in what was a entertaining free flowing match, Launceston City  came out victorious

.  The match was played at a high tempo, with many scoring opportunities at both ends. Smithton missed an open goal from 1 metre after the Goal keeper,  had been eliminated near the top of the circle, while Launceston City quickly turned the ball over and pushed down to their attacking end, forcing a Penalty corner and scoring 10 seconds before half time to take the lead into the break.  Launceston City were hitting the ball long  while Smithton were using their characteristic short passing. The Saints attacked consistently, but were at times crowding in the circle, while Launceston City were upping their work rate and maintaining pressure in attack.  Smithton scored the equaliser early in the half, and held the lead until the 59th minute when Alastair Mc Bain found the back of the net, quietening the  local crowd

Devonport were too strong for South Burnie in their elimination final at Meercroft park on Saturday . The game started at a fast pace with South scoring in the first minutes of play, only to see Devonport immediately reply.   Players were a little too enthusiastic at times, with 12 cards given for the match, with a number of illegal  tackles on the slow surface.  Devonport gained ascendency in the first half with Brendon Sienesi gaining control across the half line and with some  accurate passes by  Jamie Luck and Greg Kean, allowed Devonport to go to the break 3 goals up.   At the start of the second half, Devonport started with 9 men, with 2 players temporarily suspended and South stepped up the pace and were able to gain some momentum, scoring 3 goals. Once the Subbies were back to a full team they took control of the match and with Ben Loone controlling the centre and Greg Kean dominant in attack set up a further 2 goals to run out 6 – 4 winners.
