The Tassie Tigers have defeated the OAMPS Southern Hotshots 3-1 on the eve of grand final day at the Men’s 2010 Australian Hockey League Finals Week at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane.

Tasmania defeated South Australia, 3-1.  Goals: TAS P Marshall 7m FG, N Tremayne 14m PC, E Ockenden 64m FG; G Schubert SA27m FG

Tasmanian midfielder Phil Marshall launched the Tigers attack scoring a field goal in the 7th minute and Tasmania built on a competitive start to the match with captain NickTremayne converting a penalty corner seven minutes later.

Not to be outdone by his rival captain, Kookaburra and South Australian captain Grant Schubert scored a field goal in the dying minutes of the first half to keep victory within reach of the Hotshots.

The intensity of both teams lifted in the second half as both states scrambled to create opportunities and defend the advances of the opposing team, but it was Kookaburras’ striker Eddie Okenden who scored the final goal of the match in the 64th minute to put the Tigers in front 3-1 at fulltime.

OAMPS Southern Hotshots coach Mark Dell’Oro said despite the loss his young side will have gained valuable experience from this week and will look to finish off well tomorrow.  “It was a game of missed opportunities,” he said. “Tasmania took more opportunities and that was the fundamental difference today,” he said.

Tasmaniawill play off against the Australian Capital Territory at 11am tomorrow to confirm the fifth and sixth place getters of the tournament. South Australia will meet with the Northern Territory at 9am tomorrow to confirm the tournament’s seventh and eighth places.
