South Burnie Hawks were in no rush to earn a potential minor premiership on offer in the last roster match of the Greater Northern women’s hockey league, down two goals to a determined visiting Queechy Penguins team deep in the second half.
Reigning premiers South Burnie finally made a composed comeback, duly completed by a Mel Scolyer penalty stroke with a less than comfortable forty seconds left in the game. Early unfulfilled chances from the eventual winners were punished by Queechy with penalty corner conversions by Rachel Sihota and Cas Breadmore. Mel Boxhall in goals and Leanne Bugg at the opposite end of the ground also shone for Queechy in their last ditch to attempt to qualify for the finals, ultimately falling at the last hurdle.
City Marians ended up comfortable winners over Devonport after the home team was made to pay for missed early chances. Dominant defences in field play stood out for both teams, led by an impassable Stacey Groves for CityMarians, and Raquel Innis for Devonport. With tight marking in operation it was left to penalty corner set ups for both teams to breach their opposition’s goal mouth. For City Marians Nicole Symonds powered her shot home, followed by goals to Monique Grundy and Petrina Birtwhistle. These conversions proved to be the telling factor, giving City Marians momentum leading into their finals campaign.
West Devonport returned to the winners list with a comfortable win over Burnie Baptist, starting strongly on the scoreboard with three goals in the first half. Led by Sarah Mansfield in field play and goal scoring, West Devonport eliminated any possibility of position loss on the ladder through further goals from Angela Sheehan and Genevieve Payne. For Burnie Baptist, Jo Phillips proved yet again that you can’t lose experience gained from years of skilled play, while Maddie Murphy also impressed with her contributions.
Both Smithton and South Launceston managed to take away some satisfaction from their draw in Launceston. Smithton returned some pride to their ranks with a much better showing at the scene of last week’s big loss. Leading by a goal at the break Smithton were well placed to finish with an atoning win, but were unable to hold out a goal from opposition player Amanda Buchanon. South Launceston will now prepare for a finals appearance after being agonisingly close in the last two years.
A business like Launceston City quickly destroyed any thoughts that home town rival Tamar Churinga had of a last hurrah with three Narelle Nillson goals in the first half, and added two more for good measure in the second half.Tamar Churinga fought valiantly but through fatigue or concentration lapses, conceded two goals in the last five minutes of each half.
