Canterbury warmed up for its first finals appearance in five years with an exciting 4-4 draw with University at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre today.
The Students opened the scoring with Ben Read flicking home a penalty corner before Canterbury hit back before half-time with goals to Will Lawler and Josh Corney. University struck back immediately after half-time with Ben Florence gifting Andy Isles the easiest of finishes to equalise. Will Lawler bagged his second goal of the match as he began to find time and space in midfield before missing a penalty stroke for his hat-trick. Nick Hill scored Canterbury’s fourth goal and the match appeared over but University found inspiration from Aaron Jacobson’s upright reverse stick strike into the top corner of the net. Dave Hughes capped a fantastic senior playing career with a fine equaliser in his retirement match for University.
Derwent ran over the top of a highly depleted North West Graduates with a 4-1 victory as they warmed up for their first semi final against OHA in a fortnight. North-West Graduates’ Richard Headlam gave his side a surprise lead with a first half goal before Derwent ran over the top of their opponents after half-time. Alistair Addison, Vaughen Bowen, Alex Shaw and Mark Roberts all bagged goals despite missing five players with the Tasmanian Tigers National League campaign in Brisbane.
Prince of Wales Wellington pushed ladder leaders OHA until deep into the second half before succumbing to a 2-5 loss. Gary Street and Kitt O’Halloran both scored for the Maroons but David Woolford was dominant with an impressive four goal haul securing a fine victory for OHA.
