In the 5 V 8 semi final match today between Tasmania and the Northern Territory, Tasmania needed to win to progress to the play off for 5th position.
Tasmania started well and in the 5th minute Eliza Flanagan scored from a goal mouth melee. Tasmania pressed and was rewarded with two penalty corners, but was unable to convert. Against the run of play, Northern Territory was awarded a penalty corner for an infringement outside the circle and Australian player Heather Langham converted with a drag flick shot into goal. Tasmania’s Gabby Petterwood continued the good work of an increasingly confident Louisa Jacobson down the right side of the field but the score was locked at 1-1 at the half-time break.
Tasmania failed to capitalise on several attacking moves in the second half until the 47th minute, when after a great run along the backline Steph Blackwell found Hannah Calvert on the spot, who clinically hit the ball high into the net. NT then converted yet another penalty corner when Candice Liddy scored the rebound off the left post. Unfortunately Nina Khoury in attempting to score from a penalty corner variation injured herself and left the field for the rest of the game. In the 65th minute Emily Lawson's penalty corner strike found Jean Flanagan on the right post for a deflection goal which put the game safely in Tasmania's hands.
Tasmania wore black arm bands today as a sign of respect for the tragic passing of hockey player and umpire Dean Williams.
In other results: QLD defeated NSW in extra time 2-1; WA defeated ACT 5-1; VIC defeated SA 3-1. Tasmania plays WA tomorrow in the classification final for 5th and 6th position.
