Australian U21 Women's Championship - Day 9 Results

By Alison Monk [Thursday, July 29, 2010]

Tasmania started the match strongly with Amelia Spence earning a penalty corner in the third minute, followed shortly after by Eliza Flanagan working a second PC.

This was successfully converted by Nina Khoury with a reverse stick deflection from a pass by Blair Patten, who in the process was knocked down by a SA defender and had to leave the field after being hit in the head.

SA continued its physical game with  Australian Junior World Cup team players Bianca Greenshields and Georgie Parker combining with pace. In the 15th minute Parker eluded the Tasmanian defence and scored a field goal against Tasmanian keeper Alex McGowan. This was immediately followed up by a goal for Tasmania, with Patten's penalty corner shot saved by the SA keeper but Fiona Pearce on the left post scoring the rebound. Fiona Pearce continued her solid game at centre half to tackle and steal opportunities.

At the beginning of the second half great tackling and distribution from Emily Lawson kept the Tasmanian forwards penetrating the SA defence, but they were unable to put the ball in the net. Soon after, a Greenshields pass across the circle found Sarah Perkins and gave SA another goal to level the scores.

With 8 minutes to go another Parker pass found Katie Pisani, who drew Tasmania’s keeper out to score the match winner for SA. A late opportunity to draw with 9 seconds to go unfortunately did not come off for Tasmania.

Other results: NSW defeated NT 6-1; Queensland  drew with  ACT 1-1; WA lost to VIC 1-2.      Tomorrow is a rest day. Tasmania plays NT on Friday.
