Australian U21 Women's Championship - Day 8 results

By Alison Monk [Tuesday, July 27, 2010]
Tasmania started the must win game in an aggressive, attacking manner against the Northern Territory team which included Australian defender Heather Langham and three Queensland imports.

In true Territorian fashion, Tasmania was held at bay and unable to finish off a number of attacking moves generated by Louisa Jacobson and Georgie Forbes Smith down the right hand side of the field. Three penalty corners to nil in the first half, as well as a fabulous run from Eliza Flanagan using clever aerial skills saw her high shot touched over the cross bar. Stephanie Blackwell was unlucky not to convert two opportunities.
At the beginning of the second half, with scores locked at nil all, Blair Patten saved NT's only penalty corner of the game on the line. Tasmania was unable to convert its two penalty comers with Patten's second hitting the post.  In a tough decision Blackwell was sent off for two minutes when it was clear she was being impeded by the NT defender.
The Tasmanian crowd and coaching staff became extremely tense as Tasmania continued to pepper the NT defence and shots from Khoury, Blackwell and Eliza Flanagan were repelled.
In the 66 minute it took the calmness of 15 year Grace Calvert to slot the ball through the keepers’ legs after a great run from her big sister Hannah Calvert, for Tasmania to finally claim  the game.

Tasmania is in 3th position behind Qld, and VIC and will play South  Australia tomorrow.

Other results today: NSW defeated SA 4-1; WA defeated ACT 1-0; QLD defeated VIC 3-0
