South Burnie, Queechy Penguins, City Marians and Launceston City all came out on top in their games but the big success of the day was Smithton’s first up win for the season against Tamar Churinga
It has been a long season for the young Saints but Saturday’s win at home against Tamar Churinga was a just reward for all their efforts and no doubt provided plenty of reason for celebration after the final whistle. Bec Gould (2), and Mariah Buckby did the damage in front of goals while Laura Berechree, Nikita Jago and Leah House again carried a huge load. It was a season ending loss for Tamar who showed so much promise early on but could not bring it forward into the latter half of the year.
City Marians gave West Devonport a real lesson in possession hockey clearly outsmarting it on its way to a convincing 6 – 2 win.
City’s front half caused the most damage with goals shared amongst Petrina Birtwistle, Clare Symonds Brooke Clarke ,Nicole Symonds and Tanieka Martin. With so many influential players to mark, West was constantly kept chasing although Genevieve Payne managed to put away a couple of goals, the Dragons were really not into the contest.
A single PC conversion from Ashley Robertson midway through the second half was all that separated Launceston city and Devonport. Despite playing without Kaylah Pearce and Hannah Sealby, the Spirits still managed to match it with City for much of the game with Carmen Pearce, Jess Ryan and Jodie Watson working overtime through the midfield to keep their team’s chances alive. However, an inability to convert again proved to be damaging for Devonport with this being an area it will need to address come finals time.
The South Burnie girls helped Amy Cherry and Mel Scolyer celebrate their 200th game with an impressive 5 nil win over finals hopefuls South Launceston. Jenna Watts was in good touch for the hawks finishing with two goals while Tayla Britton, Mel Scolyer and Anna Wainwright backed up with singles of their own.
In the other Launceston match, the Queechy Penguins were convincing 5 – 1 winners against Burnie Baptist.
