Southern A Grade Men's Match Results

By Adam Clifford [Saturday, July 24, 2010]
Canterbury triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling encounter as the Lions capitalised on the sending off of North West Graduates goalkeeper Ben Creese in the dying moments.

Tom Beard made the most of the significant advantage by scoring the Canterbury winner in the 65th minute. Marcus Richardson had earlier given the Graduates the early advantage with a first half goal, only to see it cancelled out by Will Lawler’s first goal as nothing split the sides at half-time.
The sides traded goals in the second period with Nick Budgeon and Anthony Stevenson scoring goals for the Bulldogs and Josh Poke and Lawler’s second ensuring a tense finish. The result was finally determined with Creese dismissed for making contact with the ball outside the circle and Beard capitalised to seal victory.

University benefited from Graduates ill fortune, sealing a last minute 2-1 victory against Prince of Wales Wellington to jump into equal fourth position. It took a 65th minute penalty stroke goal to Wales Wellington’s Sean Carey to spark the match into life. Uni equalised with Ben Read firing home a drag flick goal, before James Dick’s crucial intercept allowed Adam Clifford to score a last minute winner.

OHA overpowered Derwent with a 5-2 victory with the Ships’ Jeremy Edwards just shading Derwent’s Paddy Ward for best afield. Toby West was impressive with two goals while Nick Leslie, Dave Woolford and Angus Boulton also scored for the Ships. Paul Ancher and Dougal Middleton both scored in the second half to give Derwent hope, while Torin Bester bravely returned from his nasty head injury for the first time.

Results: CANT 4 (W Lawler 2, J Poke, T Beard) defeated NWG 3 (M Richardson, N Budgeon, A Stevenson); UNI 2 (B Read, A Clifford) defeated POWW 1 (S Carey); OHA 5 (T West 2, N Leslie, D Woolford, A Boulton) defeated DER 2 (P Ancher, D Middleton).
