The Tasmanian boys were only playing for pride in their last match and were not as sharp as previous days but were kept in the game early through some very good keeping from Jayden Pearson during the opening stages of their match today against SA.
Once they found their rhythm the boys started creating chances and penetrating the circle with greater frequency. In a piece of individual brilliance Billy Crosland beat two defenders along the left hand baseline then threaded his shot past the keeper to give Tasmania the lead. SA equalised through a great deflection goal a couple of minutes later.
Tasmania had the upper hand in terms of possession and a great piece of team play saw them go ahead through a penalty stroke, converted by Ross Sharpe but they conceded a late goal to be 2-2 at the half.
Some enterprising play through the centre saw Tasmania re-establish their lead from a penalty corner variation but again SA regained level pegging through a desperate diving conversion. Tasmania again fought their way to the lead through Robbie McGuire but they were answered soon after by a ferocious drag flick from a penalty corner. SA repeated the dose with 4 minutes remaining to take the lead for the first time in the match.
The boys fought hard to level the score but could not find an equaliser despite repeated efforts which were thwarted by some excellent keeping from SA. Another corner variation after the final siren saw the result finish at 6-4.
Although they didn’t gain a point for the tournament the boys were a credit to themselves and HT in their commitment, sportsmanship and their improvement throughout the week.
A big thank you to: Eleanor McLeod for her work as Manager, our NSW import players Ross Sharpe, Billy Crosland and Robbie McGuire, Mark Springett and David Hancock for their coaching assistance and all the parents and supporters who travelled to Brisbane to support their boys. Congratulations to Rob Partridge and Jayden Pearson for their efforts as captains – two excellent leaders and role models for our other players.
The Tasmanian girls were not able to take their chance to make the finals today against SA, going down 2-0.
In a closely fought contest SA were able to get ahead through a corner variation which went high into the net after striking one of the defenders on the line. Shortly after, an opportunistic goal was scored by an unmarked SA player, which put the girls on the back foot. To their credit the girls rallied and kept fighting, creating chances of their own. A lack of penetration from their corners found the girls 2-0 down at the break.
Strong defensive work and an improved forward structure again saw the girls make numerous circle penetrations but the lack of clinical last passes and goal shots saw them fall short. Congratulations to the girls on great team effort throughout the match.
Thank you to Kim Lonergan (Coach) and Andrea Pearson (Manager) for their work with the girls throughout the lead-up to and during the tournament.
Congratulations to our import players Bella Worner Butcher and Ash Mayo for their great play during the tournament and thank you to all our supporters, particularly Andrea Walker for her assistance during the week.
Congratulations to all our Tasmanian players who have been an absolute credit to their team and our state. Lastly our captains, Courtney Pearson and Gabbi McLeod, need recognition for their leadership, both on and off the field, during a very demanding week.
