National U18 Indoor Championships – Day Two Match Reports

By Colin Pearson [Wednesday, January 11, 2012]

A different Tasmanian boys’ team turned up to play on the second day of the Under 18 National Indoor championships, with all the boys significantly improving their play, individually and as a team.

They started a little slowly against ACT today and found themselves two nil down after five minutes despite some good play.  They rebounded well creating more and more attacking opportunities during the half and were desperately unlucky not to score late with an excellent diving attempt from Gene Purcell.

They conceded another goal and then missed a corner opportunity just prior to half time to go in 3-0 down.

Playing with a much improved structure and with increased enthusiasm the boys pressured ACT throughout the second half, creating numerous turnovers but could not convert these chances to build any score board pressure.

They continued to press ACT and generated 8 goal shots in the last 9 minutes with Adam Akam’s shot blocked by a freakish save from the ACT keeper.  A late goal saw the final scoreline 4-0.

The boys will need to rest well as they have a double header against Vic and WA Wednesday again in 35 degree temperatures.

The Tasmanian girls impressed on their second day by defeating ACT 2-0.

The team displayed a significant improvement in their team dynamics, showing better judgement and displaying strength on the ball which was lacking in their first match.  Ash Mayo scored a field goal in the 12th minute when she pounced on a loose ball from the defence resulting in a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The second half saw both sides pressure each other through to the last 4 minutes when ACT interchanged their keeper.  The Tassie girls lifted and with strong defence work by Courtney Pearson and Bella Worner-Butcher and good forward combinations, a second field goal by Ash Mayo resulted.

It was a good team effort by all players, hopefully leading into positive wins in their upcoming double header against VIC and WA.
